Hapeville Launches Wireless Network

HAPEVILLE, Georgia - Hapeville goes wireless! Hapeville will hold its official wire cutting ceremony to mark the launch of the Hapeville WiFi Network service on Friday, November 13, 2009 at 11 am. The Hapeville Wireless Network is a Wireless Communities Georgia Grant funded project awarded to the City of Hapeville and the Hapeville Association of Tourism and Trade by the Georgia Technology Authority.
The City will the roll out of its wireless Internet, or Wi-Fi, network with an official “ribbon cutting” with Hapeville Mayor Alan Hallman, members of City Council, and Wireless Communities Georgia Program. Free Wi-Fi is accessible at the Hapeville Jess Lucas Park, located at 680 S. Central Avenue, Hapeville, GA. 30354. Attendees of the Ceremony will be encouraged to register on laptops set up in the park.
The creation of a city-wide WiFi system places Hapeville in a distinguished group of cities on the cutting edge of technology; cities such as Philadelphia and New Orleans. "This Network will connect Hapeville’s residents and business community to the invaluable communications opportunities and resources available through the internet," said Alan Hallman, Hapeville Mayor. “The Hapeville wireless network will serve as a means to promote economic development in the City’s downtown area, improve and enhance government operations, while increasing the overall quality of for its citizens and businesses. The implementation of the Hapeville WiFi Network is another attribute that makes Hapeville an attractive destination to live, work and visit.
About the Hapeville Wireless Network
The Hapeville Association of Tourism & Trade (HATT) Board, comprised of the Mayor and Council of Hapeville, is charged with reinvesting hotel/motel tax dollars into projects and programs that increase tourism. Through the Hapeville WiFi Network, the HATT Board looks to provide a wireless network that focuses on programs and infrastructure that promote tourism and trade within the City. The current Phase I coverage area was a Wireless Communities Georgia Grant funded project awarded to the City of Hapeville and the HATT by the Georgia Technology Authority in the amount of $249,000.00. HATT and the City have contracted with VC3 to build out the Hapeville WiFi network and provide Tier 2 and 3 support. The network is being built out in two phase, the first was funded by a Georgia Technology Authority Grant; the second will be funded by HATT. Phase 1 is complete.
The Hapeville Wireless Network uses wireless mesh technology that will be implemented in a two phased approach Phase A and Phase B. Phase A covers the Southside of the City 1.5 square miles from I-85 to I-75 (WCG funded), Phase B will cover the North side of the City (primarily residential area) 1 square mile. Completing both phases will cover the entire City of Hapeville in wireless access. The total square mileage that the network would cover is 2.5 square miles. The network will consist of 38 Cisco Aironet 1520 Series MAPS and 16 Cisco Aironet 1520 Series RAPS.
