Hackers Hit Molson Coors with Cyberattack

The huge multinational brewing company behind Coors, Miller, Staropramen, and Molson Canadian was hit by a cyberattack last week that stopped its brewing and beer-making capabilities.

The Molson Coors Beverage Company reported the attack, stating that “Molson Coors experienced a systems outage that was caused by a cybersecurity incident.” They identified several problems and disruptions caused by the attack, including brewing, beer production, and shipping.

Fans of Molson Coors’ massive range of beers will be waiting with bated breath to discover the extent of the attack and how it will affect the availability of their favourite tipple. Brews like Coors Light, Miller Lite, Molson Canadian, Carling, and Blue Moon could all be temporarily off the shelves if the attack is serious, and it is currently unclear what the extent of the damage is.

Molson Coors is taking the attack extremely seriously and has gone to great lengths to get their systems working at full speed once more. They have taken on several forensic information technology firms to investigate and are exploring legal options and avenues as well.

This attack shows how seriously cyberattacks need to be taken by everyone. Not just for tech companies and government agencies, solid cybersecurity measures are vital for organizations of all shapes and sizes in every industry, with vulnerable data a problem for anyone.

Ransomware attacks can be enormously damaging for supply chains, with one weak link disrupting everything from production to shipment. As almost every aspect of manufacturing moves to take advantage of technology and digital innovation, inter-connected networks offer rich pickings for online pirates. Vulnerabilities can provide access to entire internal networks, and an innocuous breach can spread rapidly throughout an organization.

This attack should serve as a wake-up call for companies that might not have fully grasped how critical cybersecurity is in preventing growing threats to their data and systems.

Taking action before an attack occurs is key, and businesses need to be working with privileged access management and using a Zero Trust approach to authentication to lessen the possibility of vulnerability and breach. These kinds of attacks often come about due to out-of-date legacy systems and resistance to change. Spending money now on actions like cloud migration or working with a specialist MSP with a cybersecurity team like us at VC3 can result in the risk reduction that your organization needs to navigate this cyber-criminal landscape.
